Almendros, G., Martín, F. and González-Vila, F.J., 1987. Depolymerization and degradation of humic acids with sodium perborate. Geoderma, 39: 235-247. Two humic acids of different origin (peat and soil) were degraded with a 5 % sodium perborate solution (140 OC). This degradation process consists mainly of a stoichiometric production of hydrogen peroxide while the perborate is reacting with carboxyl groups of the oxidized polymers. A single perborate treatment degraded more than 40% of the humic acids to soluble products, but a 5-step oxidation was necessary for total degradation, the sample being transformed into soluble oligomers with properties similar to those of fulvic acids. The oligomeric fractions with lowest molecular weights, including individual molecules (soluble in ethyl acetate), were purified by adsorption chromatography and studied by GC-MS after methylation. The higher molecular weight fractions of oligomers were recovered over polyvinylpyrrolidone, eluted by alkali, and purified by ion-exchange chromatography (47% peat HA; 25% soil HA). Degradation products included alkanes, fatty acids and dicarboxylic acids. Aromatic compounds (mainly phenolic, benzenecarboxylic and cinnamic acids) , amounted to 24-50% of the total volatile degradation products. There were striking differences between peat and soil humic acids, the former yielding typical lignin degradation products. Independently checked, the perborate degradation products were not the same as those obtained by mild treatment with hydrogen peroxide under alkaline conditions.

MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF THE EFFECT OF FOAM DEGRADATION ON MOULD FILLING IN THE GREY IRON EPC PROCESS
In this investigation a new model was developed to calculate gas pressure at the melt/foam interface (Gap) resulting from foam degradation during mould filling in the Lost Foam Casting (LFC) process. Different aspects of the process, such as foam degradation, gas elimination, transient mass, heat transfer, and permeability of the refractory coating were incorporated into this model. A Computati...
متن کاملStudy on Role of Microorganisms in Depolymerization Processes of Xenobiotic Polymers
A microbial depolymerization process of polyethylene glycol is studied with modeling and simulation based on experimental results. Weight distributions before and after cultivation of microbial consortium E1 for two, four, and seven days were introduced into analysis. Inverse problems for a molecular factor and a time factor of a degradation rate were formulated, and those problems were solved ...
متن کاملModeling and analysis of biodegradation of xenobiotic polymers based on experimental results
An endogenous depolymerization model based on uniform weight distribution is introduced. The time dependent model with temporal dependent degradation rate is reduced to a time independent model. The previously developed techniques were applied to an inverse problem to determine the degradation rate. The transition of weight distribution was simulated by solving an initial value problem. Those t...
متن کاملOxidative Degradation of Chitosan to the Low Molecular Water-Soluble Chitosan over Peroxotungstate as Chemical Scissors
Low molecular water-soluble chitosan was prepared by the depolymerization of chitosan in the presence of a series of catalysts with active W(O2) sites. Both the peroxo species [W2O3(O2)4]2- and {PO4[WO(O2)2]4}3- showed high efficiency in the degradation of chitosan, indicating that the degradation mechanism did not follow the radical mechanism. That means •OH is not the active species, which ha...
متن کاملRoles of manganese and organic acid chelators in regulating lignin degradation and biosynthesis of peroxidases by Phanerochaete chrysosporium.
We studied the effect of manganese and various organic chelators on the distribution, depolymerization, and mineralization of synthetic 14C-labeled lignins (DHP) in cultures of Phanerochaete chrysosporium. In the presence of high levels of manganese [Mn(II) or Mn(III)], along with a suitable chelator, lignin peroxidase (LiP) production was repressed and manganese peroxidase (MnP) production was...
متن کاملLow-Power Microwave Radiation-assisted Depolymerization of Ethanol Organosolv Lignin in Ethanol/Formic Acid Mixtures
Ethanol organosolv lignin separated from bamboo was depolymerized by low-power microwave radiation (~80 W) using ethanol as a swelling agent and formic acid as a hydrogen donor solvent. After increasing the temperature from 100 to 200 °C, the total amount of phenolic compounds in the products increased from 8.1% to 40.8%, and both the weight average molecular weight (Mw) and number average mole...
